nova
/ 5nEJvE /
◙ (pl. novae -viː 或 novas)
1. [Astronomy] a star showing a sudden large increase in brightness and then slowly returning to its original state over a few months
• [天文] 新星。
--› see supernova
2. Novae are believed to occur in binary star systems. Material falling from a companion star to the surface of a white dwarf collects over a long period, increasing in density and temperature, until there is a sudden runaway thermonuclear reaction which blasts much of the accumulated material into space. Novae are often visible in small telescopes, and sometimes to the naked eye
